My Recession Response
It's 4:20 on 4:20. Cannabis Culture.
I wrote for the Examiner New York today. They requested an article about how my topic of interest is being affected by the economy in a special project appropriately deemed, The Great Recession. I am posting it below:
"Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.." C.S. Lewis
I am not going to blow religious smoke and behave as though Christians are not struggling during this unfortunate economic downturn.
Just because He is our Savior certainly does not exempt us from budget cutbacks, lost jobs, home foreclosures, or spending restraint.
In fact, today I thoroughly enjoyed my fourth meal from my one Rotisserie Chicken.
But there is no grand strategy as to how Christians are weathering through the storm of this recession.
We're remaining steadfast in our walk with Jesus Christ.
We are putting one foot in front of the other, taking it one day at a time, and always looking upward. We're placing our faith in His mercy and promise; Casting our worries on Our Creator who is the only one who can bring Liberating Change that we all so desire.
He chose us in him before the creation of the world. He promises us that there will be no desire laid on our heart that he will not make provisions.
He is our Hope. Our Healer. Our Hero.
God has a great plan for this world. And He will save the day.
The Bible has over 2300 scripture verses that refer to finances, materialism, possessions, and riches.
Believe me, He is the Alpha and Omega, Beginning and End. He's thought this whole economic issue through and He redefines Wealth.
"And my God will meet all of your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19
What more can we ask? This doesn't mean rest on your laurels eating generic Cheetos, quit tweaking your extensive resume, or trim the fat on your monthly luxury expenses.
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33
In the book of Ephesians the Apostle Paul relays a sweeping explanation and promise of Jesus Christ's saving grace...
"God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth." Ephesians 1:9-10
In that uniting scripture, the Lord guarantees restoration. That all of us: This broken, dislocated, lost, fallen, struggling body will be summed up and reconciled together under the rule, reign, and headship of the Living God.
In visiting churches and in my fellowship with the Evangelical Christian body in New York City this year, it is abundantly clear, church attendance is on the rise. People want answers in this confusion. Security in these uncertain times. And Hope in the darkness. But an increase in giving is abundant as well. People are trusting in God and their purpose in him. He is the Light.
So as far as the storm goes...we're riding it out until.
"He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him." Luke 8:25
Be frugal. Be faithful. He will provide.
Do you think he will?

Street Savvy
Everybody's got their dues in life to pay
I know what nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know its everybody's sin
You got to lose to know how to win
Half my life is in books written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages.
All the things come back to you. Aerosmith

Humor. Not Hostility.
Fear is crippling. Fear manifests into anger. Fear closes doors.
It's not what you know, but who you know.Ahh yes, the power of who. This is true in the secular and non-secular world. Salvation is for sure about knowing HIM. Success...that's a little more complicated.
I am starting to reevaluate my will's and wont's. Today I was describing my ample Epicurean experience in dealing with olives, imported cheeses, and exotic desserts today while outlining my ideal dinner party menu I would serve to my closest of wealthy friends. Lost in the cremini mushroom gravy and truffle cheese, I forgot where I was. All this for an application for a Team Member position at Whole Foods Market. Which by the way is one of the least expensive places to purchase groceries in Manhattan. And my latest pursuit in making my rent.
This admirable spirit is what keeps me in bed and gets me out of bed at the same time. Land of Extremes. Highs and Lows. Possible and Inconceivable.

Movin' On Up
I love to see him come and hate to see him go...Arrival and Departure Day..oh how they feel so different. The same rain drops fall on the window pane today but the elating feeling of anticipation has been replaced with a dull dread. And the romance of meeting him with an umbrella on the subway stairs is overshadowed with the imminent last kiss and a closing cab door.... Sadness sets in like the dampness in the air.

Luffin and Limin
I don't know how many churches are in Manhattan and respective Burroughs but I am blessed beyond belief and don't believe in chance that I found City Light Church as soon as I did. Spent two hours worshiping the Cross on Calvary and fellowshiping over gloriously typical Manhattan Margherita pizza with a huge body of diverse believers....
Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me."2 Corinthians 12:9
On my way home... Stopping at Christopher Street to watch the beautiful yachts underway in the New York Harbor sailing towards the Statue of Liberty...I fell to my knees remembering my dear friend and unmatchable sailor David Geiger who taught me not only everything I know about sailing but that there's is no feeling better than the wind in your hair, and sun on your face...I wrote about the first time we sailed together eight years ago and how I relished in the feeling of riding the wind. Allow me to share...
"If you want to sing out, sing out. And if you want to be free, be free cause theres a million things to be...You know that there are.
And if you want to live high, live high. And if you want to live low, live low. If you want to say yes, say yes. If you want to say no, say no.cause theres a million ways to go.. You know that there are." Cat Stevens
